Maze Runner Review

I have just finished the first book in the Maze Runner series by James Dashner, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! (NO SPOILERS)
The main character of this novel is a teenage boy named Thomas. Although, that's only what he thinks his name is. After all, how would he know after arriving in 'the glade' with a selectively wiped memory and with no idea of where he is. He's filled with the same confusion and fear as every other boy who was placed here first felt when they arrived. One a month, every month on the same time and day for 2 years. Just as mysteriously, there are also supplies that show up routinely, once a week.

Everyone has a specific job in the glade and they work together to be fed, healthy, protected and ultimately work towards finding a way out of the maze. The important job of exploring the maze is held by 'runners' which perform the exact job you would imagine with that name. Every morning they wake up early and run through their quadrant, observing the strange seemingly patterned movements of the walls, before returning home for the night to the glade before the wall that serves as the entrance for the glade closes. This wall is meant to keep out the grievers out, which are deadly machine like creatures which seem to have a sole purpose of hunting and causing fear in the gladers. Without knowing why, Thomas has been longing to become a runner since the day he arrived.

Through out the book, more and more unexpected things begin to happen, some blame Thomas for the changes while others think he is the one who will save them. Will they escape? Who put them here? What are all these changes meaning?

I really enjoyed this book! I had been wanting to read it for a long time and I'm glad I finally got to it. I thought the plot moved along very nicely and even though the premise of this story can be confusing, I found that with the detail I was provided with, I was never confused for long until the story cleared it up. I think that Thomas shows really steady and noticeable character development through out this novel as he forms relationships with the other gladers and as he becomes more eager to escape. The ending of this book was a cliff hanger, however I was not so agonized that I was upset with the author. It definitely left me extremely excited to check out the next book in the series, though! I would recommend this book/series to anyone looking for an adventurous and dystopian novel with hints of heart felt brotherly care. Thanks for reading!

  1. I have not read any of the books in the Maze Runner series, but your review gives me a good idea of what to expect without spoiling anything major in the plot. The critiques that you gave also told me how well the book would be able to keep my interest which is obviously something you want in a book. This review was not too detailed that I got lost due to my lack of knowledge of the book and it wasn't too simplified either. This level of detail is good for telling me what I need to know about the book and what you thought of it.

  2. This book is a really good book, and I am glad you got a chance to pick it up. The twists and turns are amazing, and the whole concept is really unique. The first book is probably my favorite in the whole series, although the whole series is great. You should really consider reading the rest of the books. I like how you perfectly summarized the book without giving any spoilers. Great review!

  3. I really loved reading this book, and I loved getting to know the characters, mainly Thomas. I remember watching the movie BEFORE I read the book, and the book exceeded my expectations because I usually like the movies more than the books. I didn't know this book was a serious, though, so I may want to read the rest of them!
    Nice Review!
